To Be or Not to Be: The Daily Choice That Determines Who You Are Becoming

To Be or Not to Be — That Is Your Question
Shakespeare put it in the mouth of a prince contemplating death. But the question belongs to all of us — and we answer it every single day, not in one dramatic moment, but in a thousand small choices about how we speak, what we think, and how we act.
To be intentional or to drift. To be faithful or to be passive. To be purposeful or to be reactive. To be the person God made you to be — or to settle for a smaller, safer, less demanding version of yourself.
Every day, you are answering that question. The only real question is whether you are answering it consciously.
You Are Always Changing — The Question Is Whether You Are Directing It
Here is something most people do not fully reckon with: you are not static. You are always changing. Every experience, every conversation, every habit, every word you speak over yourself is shaping you — either toward the person you want to become or away from them.
Change is not optional. Direction is.
The person who drifts through life without intentionality is still changing — they are just letting their environment, their past, and their default patterns do the shaping. The person who chooses intentionality takes ownership of that process. They decide, deliberately, who they are going to be — and then they speak, think, and act accordingly.
This is the heart of SIIB. Not just speaking words into the air, but making a daily, deliberate decision about who you are becoming — and then aligning your mouth with that decision.
The Biblical Framework for Becoming
Romans 12:2 — Be Transformed by the Renewing of Your Mind
"Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind."
Transformation is not passive. It is not something that happens to you while you wait. It is the active, ongoing process of renewing your mind — replacing old patterns of thought with new ones rooted in truth. And one of the most powerful tools for renewing the mind is what you speak out loud, consistently, over time.
Philippians 4:8 — Think on These Things
"Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable — think about such things."
Paul is not describing a passive mental state. He is describing a discipline — the active choice to direct your thoughts toward what is true and good. What you think about consistently, you speak about. What you speak about consistently, you move toward. The discipline of thought and the discipline of declaration are inseparable.
Proverbs 23:7 — As a Man Thinks, So He Is
"For as he thinks in his heart, so is he."
Your inner world creates your outer world. What you believe about yourself — at the deepest level, in your heart — is what you become. And what you speak consistently is one of the most powerful ways to shape what you believe at that level. Declaration is not just about the future. It is about the present. It is about who you are right now, in this moment, choosing to be.
The Three Levels of Becoming
Change does not happen in one leap. It happens in layers. Understanding the three levels helps you know where to focus your declarations.
Level 1: Behaviour
This is the surface level — what you do. Most people try to change here first. They set goals, make plans, build routines. And then they fail, because behaviour change without identity change does not stick. You cannot consistently act in ways that contradict who you believe yourself to be.
Level 2: Belief
This is the middle level — what you believe about yourself, about God, about what is possible. Beliefs drive behaviour. Change your beliefs, and your behaviour follows. This is where declarations do their deepest work — not just changing what you say, but gradually reshaping what you believe at the core.
Level 3: Identity
This is the deepest level — who you are. Not what you do, not what you believe, but who you fundamentally are. When your identity changes — when you genuinely see yourself as a Fire Starter, a Dream Keeper, a Lion Tamer, a Knowledge Seeker — everything else follows. Behaviour becomes natural. Belief becomes stable. The declaration becomes reality.
SIIB works at all three levels. But it is most powerful at the level of identity.
What It Means to Choose Intentionally Every Day
Choosing intentionally does not mean having a perfect day. It means making the decision, each morning, to be deliberate about who you are becoming — and then returning to that decision when you drift, which you will.
It looks like this:
- Speaking your identity declaration before the day begins
- Catching the negative self-talk and replacing it with truth
- Choosing to respond rather than react when things go wrong
- Returning to your declaration when you fail, rather than agreeing with the failure
- Ending the day by speaking what you are grateful for and what you are becoming — not just what went wrong
These are small choices. But they compound. Over weeks and months, they produce a person who is genuinely different — not because of a dramatic transformation moment, but because of a thousand daily decisions to be intentional.
To Be Intentional. To Be Faithful. To Be Purposeful.
The question is not whether you will change. You will. The question is whether you will take ownership of that change. Whether you will decide, deliberately, who you are going to be — and then speak, think, and act accordingly.
To be intentional. To be faithful. To be purposeful. To be consistent. These are not personality traits you either have or do not have. They are choices. Made daily. Reinforced by declaration. Built into identity over time.
The choice is yours. Make it today. And again tomorrow.
Your Declaration of Becoming
"Today I choose who I am becoming. I am not defined by my past, my failures, or my current circumstances. I am defined by what God has said about me and by the daily choices I make to align with that truth. I choose to be intentional. I choose to be faithful. I choose to be purposeful. I speak it into being — today, and every day."
