You Have the Power: How to Speak to Your Soul and Change Your Life

The Power You Already Carry

Whatever you are facing right now — bullying, abuse, poverty, dishonesty, envy, addiction, unforgiveness, bitterness, depression, or despair — there is a power available to you that most people never fully access. Not a power you have to earn or achieve. A power you already carry, built into you by the God who made you in His image.

It is the power of your words. Specifically, the power to speak to your own soul — to the centre of your thoughts, feelings, and emotions — and bring it into agreement with the will of God.

This is not wishful thinking. This is a biblical principle demonstrated by the greatest figures in Scripture, and it is available to you today.

The Testimony That Overcomes

Revelation 12:11 gives us one of the most striking verses in all of Scripture about the power of words:

"They triumphed over him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony."

The saints overcame the enemy not just by faith, not just by prayer, but by the word of their testimony — by what they spoke. They used the power of the right words to live above the lies, slander, propaganda, and accusations that threatened to destroy them. They spoke truth over their lives in the face of opposition, and that spoken truth became the mechanism of their victory.

This is the SIIB principle at its most powerful: your spoken testimony — your declaration of what God has done and what God has said — is a weapon. Use it.

When David Spoke to His Own Soul

One of the most honest and instructive passages in all of Scripture is Psalm 42. David was in a predicament. He was depressed — genuinely, deeply, overwhelmingly so. He felt hopeless, as though he were in a deep pit with no way out. No amount of counsel, no amount of resources, nothing was lifting his spirit or changing his circumstances. His emotions had consumed him.

And then he did something remarkable. He spoke to his own soul.

"Why are you cast down, O my soul? Why are you in turmoil within me?" (Psalm 42:11)

He did not just feel the despair. He addressed it. He asked it a question. He refused to let his emotional state have the final word. And then he followed the question with a command and a declaration:

"Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God."

He commanded his soul to hope. He declared what he would do. And in doing so, he exercised the power that is available to every believer: the power to speak to your inner world and redirect it toward God.

Psalm 23: The Classic Faith Confession

David did not just speak to his soul in moments of crisis. He built a practice of faith confession that is perhaps the most famous in all of Scripture. Psalm 23 is not a passive description of God's goodness — it is an active, first-person declaration of covenant reality:

  • Because the Lord is my Shepherd, I will not lack.
  • The Lord leads me to right living.
  • The Lord restores my soul.
  • I will not be afraid, because the Lord is with me.
  • The Lord comforts me.
  • The Lord provides for me.
  • Goodness and mercy will follow me for as long as I live.
  • I will dwell in God's house forever.

Notice the structure. Not "God is good" in the abstract. But "The Lord is MY shepherd." Personal. Present. Declared. This is the pattern of biblical faith confession: taking the truth of God's word and speaking it as your own lived reality, in the first person, out loud.

What declarations are you making over your life?

Speaking to Your Soul in Every Situation

The power to speak to your soul is not limited to moments of crisis. It is a daily practice — a discipline of bringing your inner world into alignment with God's truth before the day begins, and returning to that alignment whenever you drift.

Whatever situation you are facing, there are verses of hope in Scripture that you can personalise and use as prayers and declarations. Here is how to do it:

Step 1: Name What Your Soul Is Saying

Before you can redirect your soul, you need to hear what it is saying. What is the dominant inner narrative right now? Fear? Hopelessness? Shame? Anger? Name it honestly, the way David did. Do not perform positivity over it. Acknowledge it first.

Step 2: Ask the Question

Follow David's pattern: "Why are you in turmoil, O my soul?" Asking the question interrupts the automatic emotional response. It creates a moment of distance between you and the feeling — enough space to choose what comes next.

Step 3: Find the Corresponding Scripture

For every negative inner narrative, there is a scriptural truth that speaks the opposite. Fear → Isaiah 41:10. Shame → Romans 8:1. Hopelessness → Jeremiah 29:11. Inadequacy → Philippians 4:13. Find the verse that speaks directly to what your soul is saying.

Step 4: Speak the Declaration Out Loud

Turn the scripture into a first-person declaration and speak it out loud. Not in your head — out loud. Faith comes by hearing (Romans 10:17), and you are always the first person to hear what you say. Speak it to your soul the way David did: with authority, with conviction, and with the expectation that your soul will respond.

Step 5: Repeat Until It Becomes Your Default

One declaration does not transform a life. But a declaration spoken daily, consistently, over weeks and months, begins to reshape the inner narrative. It becomes the new default. The new first response. The new lens through which you interpret your circumstances.

You Have the Power — Use It

This power — the power to speak to your soul and bring it into agreement with the will of God — has the ability to bring you out of darkness and despair into light and hope, no matter what you are facing. It is not dependent on your circumstances changing first. It is the mechanism by which your circumstances begin to change.

You do not have to wait until you feel better to speak life. You speak life in order to feel better. You do not have to wait until things improve to declare God's goodness. You declare God's goodness as the act of faith that opens the door to improvement.

You have the power. Speak it into being.

Your Declaration for Today

"Why are you in turmoil, O my soul? Hope in God. He is my shepherd — I will not lack. He restores my soul. He leads me in right paths. I will not be afraid, for He is with me. Goodness and mercy follow me. I have the power to speak to my soul and bring it into agreement with the will of God. I speak life. I speak hope. I speak faith. I speak it into being."
