Cover of Be Anxious for Nothing, a novel by J.C. Love: a glowing jar and a cup of tea on a cafe table on a cobbled street
Did you know the soil beneath your feet contains, at various depths, the decomposed remains of everyone who has ever lived, worried, and died on it? … They are, in the most precise chemical sense available to us, made of everyone who felt this exact thing before them and survived it.
from the novel
For the anxious

For those who are anxious. For those who worry about everything.

If your mind is already writing tomorrow’s worst-case scenarios, this story was written with you in mind. It takes worry seriously, it is gentle and funny about it, and it never once tells you to calm down.

What it is

An angel, a jar and a tin of good biscuits

Bernard is an angel with a notebook, a tin of good biscuits and a jar. His job is to visit people whose lives have quietly organised themselves around fear: the message read forty-one times, the conversation rehearsed for four days, the certainty at 3am that everything is about to go wrong.

He is very good at draining the worry away. What comes after is theirs to do.

The angel

Bernard comes with a notebook and a tin of good biscuits. He listens first, and he does not text.

The jar

It is where the worry goes. The rest of the story is about what people do once their hands are free.

The part that is yours

No one can do the living for you. The book is honest about that, and it never once tells you to calm down.

A note from the author

Even before I threw The Lord of the Rings across my bedroom and hid under my quilt, praying desperately against the nightmares creeping towards my bed, I loved to write. Everything is a story to me.

I wanted to bring all of me to this book, my voice and my faith, and not what anyone else thinks I should write. All to help. If it helps, that makes me happy.

With love, J.C.
