How to Make God-Centred Decisions
Share
Every day you make hundreds of decisions. Most are small. Some are significant. A few are life-defining. The question isn't whether you'll make decisions — it's whether you'll make them wisely, deliberately, and with God at the centre.
Intentional living isn't just about how you spend your time or structure your habits. It's about how you choose. Because your choices, accumulated over months and years, become your life.
How Do You Know God's Will?
One of the most common questions Christians ask is: How do I know what God wants me to do?
Ephesians 5:17 gives us the starting point: "Do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord's will is." God's will isn't hidden — but it does require intentional seeking. It requires slowing down in a culture that rewards speed. It requires listening in an age that rewards noise.
The good news is that God is not playing hide and seek with His will. He wants you to know it more than you want to find it. The process of seeking is itself part of the formation.
Why Decision-Making Is a Spiritual Practice
Every decision shapes your life direction. Small choices compound over time. The career you pursue, the relationships you invest in, the habits you build, the values you prioritise — all of it flows from thousands of individual decisions made over years.
Intentional living means making decisions deliberately — not reactively, not impulsively, but wisely. It means pausing before you respond. Praying before you commit. Reflecting before you act. This is not weakness or indecision. It is wisdom.

What Gets in the Way of God-Centred Decisions
Before looking at the framework, it helps to name what typically pulls us away from wise decision-making:
Urgency
The pressure to decide quickly is one of the enemy's most effective tools. Urgency bypasses wisdom. When you feel rushed into a decision, that's often a signal to slow down, not speed up.
Fear
Fear of making the wrong choice can paralyse. Fear of missing out can rush. Both distort your ability to hear clearly. Perfect love casts out fear — and perfect love is the foundation of every good decision.
Other People's Expectations
Living to please others is one of the most common ways Christians end up making decisions that aren't truly theirs. Whose voice is loudest in your decision-making process? It should be God's.
Lack of Reflection
Most people make decisions on the go, without space for genuine reflection. A life without reflection is a life without course correction. You can't navigate well if you never stop to check where you are.
A 3-Step Decision Framework
1. Align with the Bible
Scripture is your first filter. Does this decision align with God's Word? If it clearly contradicts Scripture, the answer is no — regardless of how appealing it seems or how much pressure you feel. If it's a grey area, move to the next step. The Bible may not speak to every specific situation, but it speaks to every principle that underlies every situation.
2. Pray for Clarity
Bring the decision to God in prayer. Not a quick, formulaic prayer — but genuine, honest conversation. Tell Him what you're facing. Tell Him what you're afraid of. Tell Him what you want. Then listen. James 1:5 promises that God gives wisdom generously to those who ask. Don't rush past this step. The answer may not come immediately, but the posture of asking positions you to receive it.
3. Seek Wise Counsel
Proverbs 15:22 says plans fail without counsel, but succeed with many advisers. Talk to people you trust — those who are grounded in faith, who know you well, and who have wisdom you respect. Not people who will simply tell you what you want to hear. People who will tell you what you need to hear. That kind of counsel is rare and worth seeking out.
Additional Filters Worth Using
Peace
Colossians 3:15 says to let the peace of Christ rule in your heart. Peace is not the absence of difficulty — it's the presence of God in the midst of it. When a decision brings a settled, quiet peace even in uncertainty, that's significant. When it brings persistent unease, pay attention to that too.
Fruit
What will this decision produce? Not just immediately, but over time. Decisions rooted in wisdom tend to produce good fruit — in your character, your relationships, your faith. Decisions made impulsively or fearfully tend to produce the opposite.
Consistency with Your Calling
Does this decision move you toward or away from who God has called you to be? Every significant decision is either an investment in your calling or a distraction from it. Knowing your calling gives you a framework for evaluating everything else.
Reflect and Record
Journalling your decisions — the options, the prayers, the counsel received, the outcomes — builds wisdom over time. When you look back and see how God has guided you through past decisions, your faith for future ones grows. Our Faith Pathway journals at Giddymoose are designed to help you think clearly, pray intentionally, and track God's faithfulness through every season of decision-making.
Quick Answer
How do Christians make decisions?
By aligning choices with Scripture, praying for guidance, seeking wisdom from trusted faith-grounded advisers, and paying attention to the peace of God as a ruling principle in their hearts.
Try This Today
Think of one decision you're currently facing — big or small. Write it down. Then work through the three filters: Does it align with Scripture? Have I genuinely prayed about it? Have I sought wise counsel? If you haven't done all three, do the next one today before you decide.
God Honours Intentional Decisions
You don't need certainty — you need faithfulness. You don't need to see the whole staircase — you need to take the next step wisely. God is not looking for perfect decision-makers. He's looking for people who will seek Him in the process, trust Him with the outcome, and keep walking even when the path isn't fully clear.
Take the next step with wisdom. Trust God with the outcome. That's what God-centred decision-making looks like in practice.
