What to Do When You Feel Lost and Don’t Know Your Direction
Share
You're functioning. You're getting through the days. But underneath the routine, there's a quiet, persistent feeling that you're not quite where you're supposed to be — that something is missing, or misaligned, or that the life you're living doesn't quite fit the person you feel like you're becoming.
That feeling has a name. And it's more common than you think.
You're Not Broken. You're Between Chapters.
Feeling lost is one of the most universally human experiences — and one of the most stigmatised. Psychologist Dan McAdams argues that periods of disorientation are not interruptions to personal development — they're part of it. A 2019 study in the Journal of Personality found that individuals who reported periods of identity uncertainty showed significantly higher levels of psychological wellbeing and purpose in later life. Feeling lost is often a sign that you're growing. It just doesn't feel that way from the inside.
The Difference Between Lost and Stuck
Lost means you don't know where you're going. Stuck means you know where you want to go, but something is blocking you. Both are real. Both require different responses. Most people who feel lost are experiencing both simultaneously — which is why generic advice rarely helps.
Why "Find Your Passion" Is Terrible Advice
A 2018 study published in Psychological Science by Stanford researchers found that people who believe passions are fixed and waiting to be discovered are more likely to give up when things get hard. By contrast, people who believe purpose is developed through engagement and action show greater resilience and stronger long-term satisfaction. Purpose isn't found. It's built.
What Actually Helps: A Framework for Finding Direction
Step 1: Name What You Know
Start with what isn't unclear. What do you know about your values, your strengths, the things that make you feel most alive? This is the starting point of the Purpose Pathway — built around the question: Who are you becoming, and is your life moving in that direction?
Step 2: Audit the Gap
The feeling of being lost is often the feeling of a gap — between who you are and who you sense you could be. Naming that gap precisely is more useful than trying to close it immediately.

One of the most clarifying questions you can ask when you feel lost is: What do I want to leave behind? What do I want my life to have amounted to? This question cuts through short-term confusion and connects you to something deeper and more durable.

For people of faith, one of the most powerful tools for finding direction is understanding your biblical identity. The SIIB range is built around 10 biblical archetypes — each one a specific identity with specific strengths and callings. Knowing your archetype doesn't just tell you who you are — it tells you how to move.

A Word for the Person Who's Been Lost for a While
If this isn't a new feeling — if you've been carrying this sense of misalignment for months or years — it's worth saying clearly: that doesn't mean you're further behind. It means the work is deeper. And deeper work produces more durable results. You're still here. You're still asking. That matters more than you know.
